It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of Meri Nelson who, surrounded by her loving family, passed away at her home on March 18, 2026.
Meri was born March 11, 1956, in Cherokee, Iowa to Jack and Phyllis Mehrens. Meri grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas and graduated from W.B. Ray High School in 1974. She attended the University of Texas at Austin and began her working career at the Texas Department of Agriculture. Meri met the love of her life, Don Nelson, in 1979. They married in Austin on November 17, 1984.
In 1986, Meri and Don moved to Corpus Christi where Meri began working as a legal secretary. Meri was certified as a professional legal secretary with a specialty certification in Texas civil litigation. She was an active member of the Texas Association of Legal Professionals and held several positions prior to serving as president.
In 2005, Meri and Don moved back to Austin where they thoroughly enjoyed and actively supported the live music scene, with many evenings spent hearing local and visiting artists. They also enjoyed spending time with friends and family. They had a lot of great adventures traveling with friends and family throughout the US and abroad.
Meri was a beloved sister to her two brothers, Tom and Jay and her sister, Cara. She was also a very loving and supportive aunt to her nine nieces and nephews as well as her ten great-nieces and nephews.
Meri was predeceased by her husband, Don Nelson, parents, Jack and Phyllis Mehrens, her brother Tom Mehrens, father-in-law James Raydon Nelson, and mother-in-law Muriel Hickton Nelson.
Those left to cherish her memories include her brother Jay Mehrens (Peri), sister Cara Mehrens (Jim Davis), sister-in-law Fredra Mehrens, brother-in-law Paul R. Nelson (Betty), sister-in-law Julie Nolan (Ron), her nine nieces and nephews, ten great-nieces and nephews as well as her Uncle Bill Mehrens, several cousins and many close friends.
