Joseph Lee Koonce, known affectionately to all as Joe, departed this life on March 24, 2026, in San Marcos, Texas, having lived a life marked by steadiness, warmth, and humor.
Born on May 19, 1960, in Angleton, Texas, he journeyed through the years with a spirit both loyal and generous, and he left behind the memory of a man well loved and well esteemed.
He was born to Robert and Lenora Koonce, and from them he inherited the virtues of perseverance, dignity, and devotion to kin. He is preceded in death by his parents, as well as by his brothers, Jim Koonce and John Koonce, whom he now joins. Though death hath claimed these dear ones, the bonds of family remain woven in remembrance, and their names are spoken with enduring affection.
Joe grew from humble beginnings into a man of learning and purpose. He graduated from Angleton High School and later from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, where he further shaped the course of his life. In his years of labor, he built a long and faithful career in sales of equipment for the printing industry, serving with knowledge, patience, and a manner that earned the trust of those with whom he worked. He did his work with the kind of steadfastness that seldom seeks praise, yet rightly deserves it.
Beyond his vocation, Joe found delight in the simple and enduring pleasures of life. He enjoyed golf, fishing, and football, and he also cherished hunting pursuits that gave him time in the open air and moments of calm reflection. In these things, as in all things, he embraced the fellowship of friends around him, finding joy in fun and laughter. Such pleasures were not mere pastime, but part of the fabric of a life lived with balance and contentment.
He is survived by his partner, Francine Matyi, and her son, Tyler Moore, and her brother, Kiel Williams, who knew his kindness and companionship. He also leaves behind his niece, Michelle Lynn, and her husband, Jason, as well as his nephew, Trevor Koonce, and his wife, Laura and his other niece Ginger Lawrence. He offered the quiet strength of family.
His passing in San Marcos, the city where he studied and later lived, brings a solemn close to a life filled with fun and humor. He was a man who knew the worth of hard work, the comfort of companionship, and the joy of a day well spent. His memory shall endure in the stories told, the lessons remembered, and the love that outlives him.
Joe’s life remains a lasting joy to those who knew him, for the kindness of a good heart and the steadiness of friendship. Though he has passed from this earthly scene, the light of his life continues in the hearts of those who loved him, and his legacy shall be carried forward with gratitude and tenderness.
May Joe Koonce be remembered with affection, honor, and peace, and may those who mourn him find comfort in the richness of his life and the abiding warmth of his memory.
