Camille McHugh passed away peacefully in her daughter’s Austin home on March 9, 2026, a week after her 85th birthday.
Camille earned a master’s degree in math from the University of Texas, taught high school math for several years, and stopped working outside the home with the birth of her first child. She later returned to school to learn computer programming and worked for AT&T for many years. After a move to Universal City to be closer to her mother and siblings, she worked for the Texas Department of Education. Upon her retirement, she volunteered at the Friends of the Universal City Library Bookstore; loved her dog, Zachary; shared a home with her twin, Channye; and helped older neighbors by driving them the places that they needed to go. She gardened, bargain-hunted, and enjoyed an active life.
She suffered a major stroke in 2013 and never fully recovered. In the years after her stroke, she took comfort in the love of her family and the many family milestones she was able to see and hear about. Her daughter, Christine McHugh, lived with and took care of her in her final years. At various times, Christine was assisted by Amanda Guzman, Dana Foreman, Gloria Valdez, Dee Taylor, Grace de la Rosa, Rissa McIntee, Madison McIntee, and the Hospice Austin Team. All of their help and care was deeply appreciated.
Camille was predeceased by her parents Chandler Yonge McClellan and Katherine Hernandez; as well as her sister Channye Berry; and her brothers Clayton Kamm and Frederick McClellan. She was also predeceased by Christine’s long-term boyfriend, Benny Estorga, who helped care for Camille towards the end of her life.
She is mourned by her children and their families. Her daughter, Christine McHugh. Her son, Steve McHugh, his wife Sarah, and their children: Liam, Miles, and Jackson. Her son, Jim McHugh, his wife Yamna, and Jim’s children: Noah and Chloe. Her daughter, Kathleen Adair, her husband Robert, and their child Madeline. She is also mourned by her brother, C.Y., and her long-standing friends.
Throughout life’s twists and turns, she always stayed positive and found her road. She was much loved and will be long missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held on April 25, 2026 in South Austin at Jim and Yamna’s home. Details to follow from family.
