Glenn Wilfred Rust, Sr.

Glenn, lovingly known as Dad, Grandpa, Papa, PawPaw, and Rusty passed away on April 1st, 2026. He was born in San Antonio on Jan. 8, 1934, to Robert W. Rust and Ura Williams. Glenn moved to Austin with Bettilynn and their four sons in July 1973.
Glenn is survived by his wife of 72 years, Bettilynn, the love of his life and best friend, and their four sons: Glenn Jr. (and Lori), and their children Jenna, Jessica and husband Philip, and Tommy; Greg (and Linda), and their children Taylor and wife Amber, and Kendall and husband Mike; David (and Christy) and their children Kayleigh, Dawson, Duncan and Westin; and Gary (and Jennifer), and their children Catherine and Julie. Glenn was also blessed with two great grandchildren, Ryleigh and Brooklyn Rust, and his sister Diann Gunn. He is preceded in death by his parents Robert W. Rust and Ura Williams, his brother-in-law James Gunn, his granddaughter Helen Rust, and his grandson Dillon Burleson.
Glenn was a graduate of Brackenridge High School, San Antonio College and completed his degree at St. Mary’s University. He earned his C.P.A. license in 1984. Glenn was employed as the Comptroller at San Antonio Chest Hospital, Director of Personnel at The Texas Department of Health and retired as Deputy Commissioner of Management and Administration for The Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation. During his career, he chaired many work and professional committees for the organizations where he worked. He was instrumental in starting a Federal Credit Union for employees at the Chest Hospital and was President of The Texas Public Employees Association Chapters at both the Chest Hospital and The Texas Department of Health.
Glenn was active in ministries at St. Louis Catholic Church serving on the Finance Board for several years, the Building Committee, Liturgy Commissioner, Lector, Acolyte, Communion Minister to Nursing Homes and Eucharistic Minister. He and his wife Bettilynn transferred to St. Thomas More Church in 2004 to move closer to their sons and their families and grandchildren. He became active at St. Thomas More and served on the Pastoral Council, Eucharistic Minister to Nursing Homes, Bereavement Ministry, Eucharistic Minister, Mobile Loaves and Fishes and member of the Welcoming and Registration Ministry. He served as a Committee Co-Chair at St. Thomas More for Bishop Gregory Aymond’s Our Faith Our Legacy Capital Campaign. He was active in the Knights of Columbus at both parishes. As the father of four sons, Glenn was active with the Boy Scouts and coached little league baseball for seventeen years.
He looked forward to playing golf with his friends and was proud of his three holes-in-one. He enjoyed working outside in his yard and prided himself on having one of the best landscapes in the neighborhoods where he lived.
Glenn was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Glenn considered his children, grandchildren and great children as God’s greatest gifts and enjoyed spending time with all of them. He was immensely proud of all their accomplishments. Glenn died peacefully surrounded by family. He will be missed beyond words.
The family would like to thank the IMC staff at St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center, and the caregivers at Longhorn Village.
A funeral mass service will be held on Friday, April 17th, 2026, at 1:00 pm, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, located at 10205 N. FM 620, Austin, Tx. 78726. A reception will follow the funeral mass on the St. Thomas More Campus.
